How to Make a Silver Ring Without a Gas Torch

If you search "how to make a silver ring at home" you'll find the same advice everywhere. Buy a strip of sterling silver, saw it to size, bend it around a mandrel, solder the join with a gas torch, pickle it, sand it, and polish it. It's a long process with a lot of tools and techniques to learn, and by the end, you've usually only made a very basic band.

That's definitely one way to make a ring. It's not the only way. That's exactly why I fell in love with lost wax casting instead. When it comes to wax carving and sculpting, you don't need any open flames. 

Here's how the lost wax process works:

Step 1: Sculpt your design in jewellers wax

Step 2: Send your wax design to a local casting house

Step 3: Receive your designs back in raw metal form 

Step 4: Sand & polish your design.

Traditional Wax Carving Vs. the Lost Wax Build-Up Method

There are two main ways to carve wax jewellery. The traditional method involves carving your design from a tube of wax using a jeweller's saw and files. The alternative is the lost wax build-up method, where a soldering iron is used to build wax directly onto a mandrel, allowing you to create your design from scratch and more organically.

Once you create your design, that wax model gets cast into solid silver. The wax is packed into a flask and covered with a plaster-like material called investment. The flask is heated in a kiln, the wax is melted out, and molten silver takes its place. This is how the term "lost wax" was coined. What you are left with at the end of the process, is your ring design in metal, exactly as you carved it.

You don't need a gas torch, kiln or expensive workshop setup for this process. To get started, all you need is wax, a soldering iron, a few hand tools and a local casting house to turn your wax model into solid silver.
