You create your design in jewellers wax with a soldering iron and files, then send it to a professional casting facility where it’s turned into solid metal like silver, gold, brass or bronze. A mould is taken of your wax model, and your design is replaced with an exact replica in solid metal using the investment casting process.
Yes. This process is beginner-friendly and designed for people starting from the ground up. In my lost wax jewellery course, you’ll learn how to sculpt in wax, outsource casting, refine your metal pieces, and set stones step by step.
No. You can work from a simple desk or small space at home. The metal casting is outsourced, so there’s no need for a full workshop or intimidating equipment.
You only need a small set of tools like jewellers wax, a soldering iron, mandrel and basic finishing tools. You don’t need casting equipment, kilns, or gas torches for this process. You can view the beginner's guide tool list here.
Casting costs vary depending on the size and thickness of your design, as most casting facilities charge per gram of metal used. The chunkier and heavier your piece is, the more it will cost. For silver, this is often around $6 AUD per gram, plus a small an $8 AUD casting fee but this depends on the facility.
Once your wax model is ready, you send it to a casting facility. They handle the moulding and metal pour, then return your piece in a raw state ready for you to clean up and finish.
