Article: Georgie’s First Organic Silver Ring at a Sunshine Coast Ring-Making Class

Georgie’s First Organic Silver Ring at a Sunshine Coast Ring-Making Class

Creating organic textures in jewellery using the lost wax build up technique

Georgie (my wax carving student) made this stunning heavily textured silver design in my beginner ring making class in Yandina on the Sunshine Coast. She’d never tried jewellery making before, and this was her first time using the lost wax build up technique, it's insane in the best way possible!

She started with wax and began sculpting. As she added wax and shaped it, the ring just sort of unfolded in front of her. She worked intuitively, following the forms as they came together, and created this beautiful organic design over the course of 2 hours.

This is exactly what I love about wax sculpting. You don’t need to start with a jewellery making background or a perfect design in mind. You can start shaping the wax and see where it takes you.

Here’s a look at the different stages of Georgie’s ring, from the wax sculpture she made in class to the raw silver casting and the finished, polished ring.

Once Georgie had finished sculpting her ring, I sent it away to be cast in 925 sterling silver. The ring came back as a raw, frosted casting, ready for the next part of the process.

I then refined and polished the ring, bringing the piece to a high shine while preserving Georgie’s organic detail.

The best thing about lost wax casting is that you can send your wax model to a professional casting house to cast your pieces for you. That means you can focus on sculpting the wax and refining the metal, while the casting itself is taken care of by someone with the right equipment and skill.

If you’ve been wanting to try making your own silver jewellery, you can register your interest in my next in-person ring making class on the Sunshine Coast, or learn at your own pace in my online lost wax jewellery course for beginners. The course is a little portal into my world of wax: the techniques, tools and all of the things I’ve learned along the way. You’ll also be invited to join our private Facebook group, where more than 600 students share their work and support each other.
