Wax Carving Student Spotlight: Maria Russell

Maria Russell from Soft Claw Studio

Maria Russell is the creative behind Soft Claw Studio, where she sculpts playful, organic jewellery designs through lost wax sculpting. With a love for fluid, molten textures and sculptural forms, Maria creates unique pieces full of character, including her growing collection of expressive face pendants, known as her "Lil Guys".

We recently caught up with Maria to hear more about her wax jewellery journey, the inspiration behind her designs and where she hopes to take her creativity next.

How did you first get into wax jewellery making?

I've always loved jewellery and the stories behind each piece. After trying beading and silversmithing workshops, I discovered lost wax carving and was instantly hooked. I love how creative it feels without the pressure of being perfect.

What style of wax jewellery do you love creating most?

I'm currently drawn to pieces that feel both organic and carved. My favourite designs are the face pendants I'm exploring alongside my Tarot inspired pieces. I love creating forms that feel fluid and molten, but still structured.

What has your wax jewellery journey been like so far?

A mix of highs and lows but every challenge has taught me something. I try to see mistakes as experiments rather than failures. Each piece helps me improve and keeps me excited to create more.

What is your favourite wax design you’ve created and why?

My growing collection of "Lil Guys" the face pendants I'm creating. I love exploring different expressions, personalities and sizes, making each one feel unique. It's a collection I'm continuing to grow and develop.

What advice would you give to someone nervous to start wax carving?

The worst thing that can happen is you end up with a piece of jewellery you made yourself. Even if it isn't perfect, you've still learned something and created something with your own hands. That's always worth it.

What did you enjoy most about the metal bones lost wax jewellery course?

I loved being able to learn at my own pace while having such detailed guidance available. I still revisit sections when I need a refresher. The resources and tool recommendations made the whole process feel much less overwhelming.
