Wax Carving Tools for Beginners
The traditional wax carving technique and the modern wax build-up sculpting approach require different tools. If you're using the wax build-up method (my favourite), this is what you need to get started from home.
Your beginner wax build-up tool list
- Soldering iron with adjustable temperature settings
- Soldering iron cleaning pot
- Genuine Ferris jewellers wax, wax tubes or blocks
- Small-large files for smoothing and refining your wax model
- Wire brush to clean your files
- Ring sculpting mandrel
- Ring sizing mandrel
- Ring sizing loops
- Masking tape
- Craft knife
- Vice
- Baking tray
That's it. You don't need anything else to make your first piece.
What you don't need as a beginner wax jeweller
-
Casting equipment
One of the biggest perks of outsourcing your casting to a professional casting house is that you don’t need any intimidating, expensive, or high-risk equipment.
-
Specialised wax carving files/tools
If you're making jewellery with the build-up method, then you will not need high-end, specialised carving tools. You'll sculpt your designs with jeweller's wax and a soldering iron, then you'll refine and tidy the shape using a craft knife and basic files.
FREE tool list for lost wax casting
I’ve put together a free lost wax jewellery tools guide for beginners just getting started. It includes specific product recommendations and direct links to suppliers in Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Europe, and the UK.
