Creating Organic Texture With Lost Wax Carving
Today I turned my phone off and I sat down with my tools and my wax and I didn't even have music playing. I had no podcast in the background. All I had was my tools and my imagination.
As a result, I came up with these deliciously molten, whipped butter looking wax carved textures and they are just divine.
I think that's the thing that pulled me into wax carving jewellery in the first place. It was the ability to create unique textures, organic shapes and details that would be pretty much impossible to achieve with traditional jewellery fabrication techniques.
One of the things I love most about lost wax carving is that there really are no rules. You can melt, carve and shape the wax however you like until something interesting starts to emerge.
To achieve the texture in these designs, I used my soldering iron on various temperatures, craft knife, lighter, files and sanding sponges. A lot of my favourite wax carving techniques come from simply experimenting and seeing what happens (and hoping for the best).
If you've ever wanted to learn how to make wax jewellery at home, I have an online lost wax jewellery course as well as a wax carving kit for beginners. Everything is designed for complete beginners, so you can start learning wax carving from home with no prior jewellery making experience, all from the comfort of your home.
