Student Spotlight: Mitch Soto's Lost Wax Jewellery Journey

Mitch is a jewellery maker with a passion for creating bold, chunky wax designs! As a student in the Metal Bones Lost Wax Carving Jewellery Course, I recently asked him a few questions about his jewellery journey, favourite designs, and what he has enjoyed most about learning the lost wax casting process. Here's what he had to say.
How did you first get into wax jewellery making?
I was sand casting and playing around with silver when I discovered designing jewelry with wax after I stumbled upon it watching YouTube videos on different techniques.
What style of wax jewellery do you love creating most?
Large, chunky pendants
What has your wax jewellery journey been like so far?
Off the deep end - nonstop madness (in a good way)
What is your favourite wax design you’ve created and why?
My spiders I created had been my favorites, but one of my new pendants with beading throughout is now- I’ve practiced a few times using that technique and getting them somewhat uniform and align where it doesn’t make the design look wonky is challenging and it came out better than expected. The wild horse center stone is stunning and overall it looks very “royal” if that’s a thing

What advice would you give to someone nervous to start wax carving?
It’s just wax - it can be manipulated and shaped anyway you can imagine. If you’re not happy with the design you can always change it.
What did you enjoy most about the metal bones lost wax jewellery course?
I loved the design and instruction of the course as it was easy to navigate to the different sections. But I’m a guy and don’t always “read the instructions well“ so when I had questions Cassandra was always quick to reply, gave me feedback, and always very encouraging. I was expecting maybe a week or two reply but it was always less than 24 hours - which in turn makes this feel like a community.
