Article: Best Extractor Fan for Wax Carving

Best Extractor Fan for Wax Carving

When you’re working with jeweller’s wax, it’s not really designed to be heated at high temperatures (with a soldering iron). That’s why I always wear a face mask and work in a well ventilated space with a window and an extractor fan.

There are a lot of options out there, but you don’t need anything complicated or expensive. I use a simple fume extractor fan for soldering and pyrography because it’s small, affordable, and fits easily into my desk setup. It works alongside my mask and ventilation. This might be more cautious than what most people do, but if your health is a priority, it’s worth doing the same.

This type of extractor fan won’t magically purify the air, but it does make a big difference. It helps draw smoke and fumes away from your face while you sculpt.

Most of these fans use carbon filters, and they need to be replaced over time. If you don’t maintain them, they become less effective at pulling fumes away from your workspace, rendering the fan useless.

If you find yourself wax carving for hours at a time, I recommend setting up your space with good airflow, a face mask, and a simple extractor fan working together.

Here’s a quick video showing my extractor fan setup in action:
